Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Easter at Dolores Park
I’m not sure that I remember what Easter was all about in other places because those memories have been replaced by what Easter means in San Francisco. The first couple of years that I was here in the city, Easter meant adults doing Big Wheel Races down Lombard Street. Those races have now moved across town but that doesn’t mean that Easter is any less fun in my book.
The main thing that happens on Easter for me each year is the trek over to Dolores Park to check out the annual Easter celebration that is put on there by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The nuns all come out in their full costumes and offer up a party that includes music and contests and all sorts of contagious fun.
It isn’t just the nuns that you’ll find in costume at this event either. Many participants come out wearing costumes that include spandex bunny suits, Southern belles looking like their ready for Easter Sunday at Church and the option of wearing nothing but a strategically placed Easter basket.
Go to see these people. Go with your own costume. Go to watch the contests for best bonnet and Hunky Jesus. Just go. You’ll suddenly realize what Easter is supposed to be about! It’s happening this Sunday during normal daytime hours at the park. You won’t be able to miss it if you’re in the area.
