I Adored SF Follies

I’ve been wanting to see the SF Follies musical since it started back in February. As usual, there were just so many other things to see and do in this sexy city that I kept putting it off and putting it off. But I finally did make it to the show over the weekend and I absolutely adored it. It’s playing for a couple more weeks and I absolutely recommend checking it out if you can work it into your probably-busy schedule.

It’s hard to describe the performance in a way that I feel satisfied with. It’s difficult not to draw comparisons to Beach Blanket Babylon (and the show itself makes the link) but what you’ll find is that they don’t quite compare because this show is the Beach Blanket for locals. If you don’t live here, you’ll probably only get about half the humor of it (although the entertainment may still make it worth your money).

There are many bits and pieces to describe that I could say were the reasons I liked the show. The cast is hot. The songs are fun. There are a couple of really cool costumes. There’s a great mixture of SF history and modern life in San Francisco. Ultimately, it’s fun.

But I guess what I really loved is the way that the musical completely makes fun of San Francisco without ever for a second making you think that there’s any reason not to love it here. If you read what I wrote for my part of the collaborative I Live Here: SF project then you’ll know that I feel like San Francisco is my geographical equivalent of that romantic ideal of “the one”. And what this means to me is that I can look at San Francisco without the rose-colored glasses and see every single problem and annoyance here but I still fall head over heels in love with this city every time I step outside. SF Follies approaches the city with this same stance - the stance that there are many things to laugh at about the ups and downs of life here but ultimately there is no other place as amazing as here.

Highly recommended.
