9 1/2 Years Behind the Green Door

One of San Francisco’s interesting sexy sketchy places is the Mitchell Brothers O’Farrell Theatre which is not just a strip club but also a place with a rich scandal-filled history. The theater was opened as an adult movie theatre back in the late 1970’s and became a leading lap-dance place by the early 1980’s. The enterprising brothers also got involved in the porn business and would feature porn stars as headlining strippers on the stage. It was popular for a lot of reasons but it really hit the public radar in the early 1990’s when one brother shot and killed the other brother. It continues to be in operation today and showcases its old history in modern style. You can check out themed rooms including The Green Door Room which is named after one of the brothers’ most popular porn films.

You can read a lot of interesting stuff about this history in the book by Simone Corday titled 9 1/2 Years Behind the Green Door: A Mitchell Brothers Stripper Remembers her Lover Artie Mitchell, Hunter S. Thompson, and the Killing that Rocked San Francisco. The lengthy title pretty much sums up the story of this author who dated Artie for ten years before he was killed by his brother in the early 1990’s. This - and her work in the club - gave her lots of insight into what was really going on there at the time and those secrets are revealed in the text of the book.

Some of that text can be heard aloud as read by the author herself tonight at a free event over at Good Vibrations on Valencia. The reading starts at seven and the author will sign your copy of her book.
