The Bare Chest Calendar Competition is Underway
If you’ve been around the Bay Area for long enough then you’ve probably heard about the annual bare chest calendar competition. After all, this thing has been going on here for more than two decades. But if you haven’t heard of it then here are the details so that you, too, can be in the know.
The bare chest calendar competition is a fundraiser event that includes the fun of a chest-baring competition at The Powerhouse every week for several months out of the year. It started back at The Stud in the mid-’80s. What was then just a bare chest competition evolved into calendar. The competition moved from The Stud to The SF Eagle and then made its way to where it’s at now.
Basically the way it works is that guys fill out a competition to compete in a chest-baring contest on Thursday nights at The Powerhouse. Each week there are about half a dozen guys that come up on stage to show off their chests. They also get interviewed so you can learn more about them. These weekly competitions determine who will be in the calendar for the following year.
So, every Thursday night at The Powerhouse from now until about the end of April, this competition is taking place. After that, there will be a variety of events throughout the rest of the year including a bunch of stuff that goes on during Pride as part of the launch / release of last year’s calendar. And then the 2010 calendar will be put together and the guys who were the winners of the competition that’s happening right now will be the guys baring their chests on the calendar.
The calendar is sold as a fundraiser for the AIDS Emergency Fund (AEF) and the Positive Resource Center (PRC). If you’re interested in helping out but don’t want to bare your chest or buy a calendar, they also have some volunteer positions open.
