Sexy Sunday Brunches in the Castro

I have been invited to Sunday brunch at Lime in the Castro about half a dozen times so far this year. It seems to be the thing to do on weekends in San Francisco, due in no small part to the fact that they offer bottomless mimosas for $6 which is a bargain anywhere and particularly here in the city. I finally got a chance to take someone up on this offer last Sunday … sort of.

See, the thing about Lime is that it’s something of an event.

You think of brunch and you typically think of a lazy meal with some drinks and conversation. That’s not what you’re going to find at Lime. What you’re going to find at Lime is that you’re basically heading to a club at noon on a Sunday. The music is pumping, the line is out the door and you get to wear a cute little white and pink bracelet that shows you’ve shown your of-age ID to the bouncer … um, er, host.

It’s a scene. While we were waiting for the rest of the group to arrive, I watched beautiful couples of various orientations making out in the rain outside the bar. People were dressed up enough for brunch that I wondered whether they’d be dancing all night and were still going or actually got up early enough to work on looking flawless. When the group of us finally all found each other, we decided that Lime was no place for a group of eight to try to have a brunchtime conversation.

Luckily, probably to compete with the deal over at Lime, the Barracuda restaurant next door also offers bottomless mimosas for $6 and they had a table in the window that happened to be open so we went there. The truth is that brunch there is also something of an event. The music was loud enough that we occasionally found ourselves screaming to hear each other (or ceasing our conversation to sing along with the likes of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood). It definitely felt a bit like being at a club (and the uber-long bathroom line added to the effect). But it was fun. Four hours worth of fun.

And it was sexy. The Castro is just sexy in general. I go to that neighborhood and I can feel the sexuality come steaming off of the street. From our window seat, we could watch people cruising each other and pawing at each other. One of the girls in our group got hit on by another girl in the bathroom line (if you consider it being hit on when a girl tells you “my straight friend doesn’t want your punany, but I do …). And all around us there were hot people laughing and drinking and reveling.

I was there to hang out with old friends and meet new ones, not to have a sexy time, but the fact that I live in a city where people revel at noon on a Sunday seems quite happy to me indeed.

Sounds fun - and $6 bottomless mimosas? Hell yeah!

@SF Indie Fashion - I know, I couldn’t even believe it was really true. :)

I’ve been curious about Lime. I pass by it whenever I’m heading out to the Castro for dinner. But I don’t know if I’d be up for having brunch in a club-like atmosphere.

@KennethSF - That’s pretty much how I felt about it. It’s a good place for later in the day though.

[...] San Francisco is anything but a boring place and the people who live here are the opposite of dull. People here live fully. They create regularly. They embody self-expression in everything from the way that they dress to the events that they attend to the discussions they have over brunch in the Castro. [...]
