People who read this blog regularly know that I’m a big fan of burlesque performances. They also know that I’ve mentioned the School of Shimmy more than once. This is a set of burlesque classes that are taught by burlesque performer Dottie Lux over at the Center for Sex and Culture. And yes, I’m here to let you know that a new set of classes are beginning again and that I believe you should sign up now if you’ve ever had an inkling that burlesque dance might be something that you’re interested in trying.

Why am I such a fan of this set of classes? After all, there are quite a few other places that you can take burlesque classes and erotic dance classes - and many of those places are really great. But I really support this specific set of classes for a few reasons including the following:

• Students have the opportunity to create their own persona and put together a complete little show. You aren’t under any obligation to perform live if you take these classes but it’s something that you do have the opportunity to do and that’s just really rare and really cool.
• Dottie Lux is a super awesome woman. This isn’t to say that the teachers of other classes in the city are any less awesome but I’ve met this lady and she’s easy to get along with … the kind of person who exudes superstardom but is somehow also totally down to earth. And she seems to be a good teacher as well.
• The classes are held at The Center for Sex and Culture. This is a really cool space that does a lot of important things for this community and brings a lot of great education and entertainment together so I think it’s something that should be supported in any way possible.
• The School of Shimmy classes offer a really broad introduction to burlesque performance. These aren’t just classes that teach you basic ways to move your body - they do that but there are also classes in things like learning how to do business as a burlesque performance and learning how to make your own costumes in DIY style.

Here is a look at the classes that are being offered in the upcoming session of the School of Shimmy:

• Burlesque 101 and 201. This is where you learn what burlesque is and how to do it yourself.
• Burlesque crafts class. Learn how to make pasties in the company of other cool creative women.
• Business of burlesque. There’s more to being a performer than just having a good time and some people want to learn about that side of the art. This is your chance.
• Go Go dance class. Getting back to the fun stuff!
• Stripping for your lover. This is a couples class where you can learn about bringing burlesque into the bedroom. Sexy!!

These classes start on Sunday March 8th and run through the end of the March with a final performance the first Friday in April. Each class is $30 and it is recommended that reservations are made in advance since there are lots of other ladies quickly filling up the seats.
