Noir City Film Festival Begins Tomorrow

Going to movies today is just a standard experience but going to the movies back in the 1940’s and 1950’s was really a special treat. It was glamorous and romantic, a chance to escape from the world around you and immerse yourself in the passionate drama of Hollywood. It is out of this era of film that so many classic sexy movies were born. And it is an era which can be relived here in San Francisco this month at the Noir City Film Festival, one of San Francisco’s sexiest annual events.

The Noir City Film Festival brings these great classic movies to the screen over at the Castro Theatre (arguably one of the sexiest historic movie theatres still standing in this country). The theme of this year’s event is Newspaper Noir which means all of the films that are showing are at least loosely related to the newspaper industry - a curious and creative choice for a film festival theme. What’s really neat about the festival is that they’re doing back-to-back movies each day with the second of those movies being a rarely-seen ”B Film” in the true tradition of the 1940’s/1950’s theatre-going experience.

Not all of the films in this festival are specifically sexy. They’re crime dramas with elements of all different sorts of emotion. But the style of the films and the stars that come out in them all have that old fashioned glamour that emanates sexiness. And some of them are specifically sexy. For example, the Saturday Night shows are two steamy movies starring Arlene Dahl who will be on the stage in person to speak at this event. In Sexy Scarlet she plays a “sexy kleptomaniac” and in Wicked as they Come she plays “a woman who learns early that sex is how she’ll get ahead in the world”. Steamy.

The festival runs through February 1st.
