The Edwardian Ball is Upon Us
After I posted the article earlier this month on how you know when you’re a true San Franciscan, I was offered a number of additional insights into the “only in SF” things that make this city special. One of the most observant of these insights and one which totally rang true was “you know you’re a true San Franciscan if you have a costume for every occasion”.
More than anywhere else that I’ve ever been, San Francisco is a city that loves to dress up. This is most obvious at Halloween when people get ready for private parties, street parties, city events and annual events like the Exotic Erotic Ball. However, it’s something that we see happening all throughout the year - at various events and street fairs and clubs. People here get into costume for flash mobs and movie premieres and drag shows and sometimes for no reason at all.
For those people who do need a reason to get into costume, this weekend’s annual Edwardian Ball provides just such an excuse. This is a music/ dance/ performance art event which is populated by attendees in turn-of-the-century costumes who are reveling in a kind of dark glamour. The event was inspired by the macabre works of artist/writer Edward Gorey and has grown from its birth into a big sexy annual event here in San Francisco.
The ball itself happens on Saturday, January 24th but there are big related events going on both Friday night and Sunday night. Friday night is the second annual Edwardian World’s Faire which is an expo of art and fashion and technology. Sunday night is the third annual “Sunday Gorey Sunday” variety show which is performance art at its finest. And in between those two creative nights is the ball which includes circus performances and other delights but is basically just a night of indulgent dark hedonism.
Obviously, there are a lot of things going on at The Edwardian Ball. Abundant creativity can be enjoyed through all of the different performances and exhibits that are being offered up here. But where you’re really going to see the creativity come alive is in the costumes worn for this event. Check out the ball’s “list of costume resources” for information on where you yourself can get costumes for attending this event.
Check out Laughing Squid’s post on the event for more detailed information as well as great photos of what you can expect to see if you decide that you want to participate.
