Sexy Travel Destinations: San Francisco vs. Las Vegas

Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows that I’ve spent the last several days in Vegas. More days than I had originally planned on, in fact, because there were so many problems with this trip (my personal blog has all of the details about that if you’re interested). Truth be told, we didn’t really have a great time. But there’s no denying that Las Vegas is another one of this country’s sexy cities so I couldn’t help but compare the sexiness of Vegas to the sexiness of San Francisco while I was there.

Which one wins out? For me, it’s San Francisco hands down. Of course, I’m biased by the fact that I love this place. And perhaps my vision is colored by the fact that the trip was so bad that all I could think the whole time was that I wanted to get back to my city … and that I have no idea why anyone would ever want to leave San Francisco to vacation elsewhere! But despite my biases, there were some solid reasons that I came up with to back up my personal belief that San Francisco is the sexier travel destination of the two.

Here’s a few of the reasons that I prefer sexy SF to sexy Vegas:

Sexy San Francisco is less expensive. Sexy Vegas is expensive. Sure, the drinks are free if you’re playing in the casino but you’re probably losing money on the games anyway. The clubs all have dress codes that require you to have the kind of clothes that cost money. And they have exorbitant cover charges so if you want to go dance with other sexy people, you’re going to pay an arm and a leg. You can find that in SF if you want to but it’s also easy to find another sexy scene here that doesn’t cost so much. The shows are great and there are definitely some sexy ones (we saw La Cage this time; I’ve seen Zumanity in the past; both I’d recommend to others) but they’re also expensive. I’d trade that in for SF’s inexpensive burlesque or drag scene any day.

Las Vegas is cheaper. Vegas may be more expensive than sexy San Francisco but somehow it still comes across as really cheap. The girls wearing expensive dresses look a little bit too glittery. The guys shelling out money on expensive covers just look a little bit too skeezy. There’s just something cheap about Vegas. Not to say that you can’t find cheap in San Francisco if that’s your thing but the general feeling I get in San Francisco is a more chic kind of sexy a lot of the time. How it’s possible that we have inexpensive events that come across as more sophisticated, I’m not sure, but it seems to be the case.

San Francisco is more intimate. San Francisco is a small city with small venues. The physical space is small. So you’re up close and personal with the sexy people here all of the time. You’re rubbing torsos with them on the dance floor even when you don’t want to be. You’re getting a sniff of their scent as they walk past you on the street. You don’t get that in over-the-top, super-huge Las Vegas. And if you go to see a sexy performer of any kind here, there’s a good chance that you’re going to be physically close to him or her which isn’t going to be the case with the Crazy Girls or the Cirque performers in Vegas.

What happens in Vegas. Ultimately what makes San Francisco the sexier place to me is the fact that this city is so sex-positive. You know the saying about “what happens in Vegas” … well what that seems to indicate is that people go there to do things that they are ashamed of,  things that they want to do but don’t want anyone in their real lives to know that they want to do. They go to Las Vegas to do sexy things that they normally aren’t comfortable with. Not the case in San Francisco. People come here so they can do the sexy things that they want to do and they don’t care if anyone knows it. That open attitude and willingness to just be who you are (and take that person home with you if you have to leave San Francisco for some reason) is exactly what makes San Francisco the sexiest city in this country.

I will note, however, that San Francisco’s well-known sex club, The Power Exchange, has closed recently and they do have a location open in Vegas so I guess you could argue that Vegas has something going for it right now. What do you think? Does San Francisco beat Vegas in terms of sexy cities?
