Tease-o-Rama Burlesque Convention 10/2 - 10/4
One of the sexiest things that you can find regularly in San Francisco is burlesque performances. There are several burlesque troupes in the Bay Area that perform on a regular basis in various types of locations and there are also quite a few well-known burlesque performers who teach classes and give lectures on a semi-regular basis. But all of these fun events pale in comparison to the big one that’s coming up soon … the Tease-o-Rama Burlesque Convention.
This convention was first launched in 2001 to celebrate the neo-burlesque movement and the performers that are legendary and emerging in the entertainment industry today. This year, the awesome convention is hitting the road for a short tour and one of the stops along that tour is this sexy city. The event kicks off with a party at Rickshaw Stop on Thursday, October 2nd and then continues on through the weekend with two huge performances (each different from the other) at Bimbo’s 365 on the following two days. As if that’s not enough, there will be related events including classes and lectures at Fort Mason and a movie night in El Cerrito.
All of the details for the event can be learned from the Tease-o-Rama web page. What you can’t learn there is how this reflects the sheer sexiness of this city. Although the burlesque event is on tour, it’s not an event that would be welcome in every city in this country. It’s the kind of event that is only welcome in places like San Francisco - places where there is both a love for the sultriness of being sexy and yet an appreciation for the art and entertainment of taking off your clothes.
You see, burlesque is something that is really an art form. It changed over the years. Historically, it was a risque performance art but one which ultimately was all about performing. The performers put a lot of work into their choreography and their routines. They were complemented on stage with big brass bands and comedy skits between performances. This was theatre at its sexiest. But then burlesque started to fade away as more modern strip clubs became more popular. People started to be less interested in performance and more interested in seeing smut on stage. Burlesque disappeared for a time.
Today, there are plenty of places where you can go to see smut on the stage - and San Francisco itself has many of those places. But there are also a few places where you can go to return to the historic entertainment art of being sexy. There are a few places where burlesque thrives. And San Francisco is one of those places. The women (and men) who will be featured at this burlesque convention represent the sexy side of San Francisco - the one that knows that sometimes the tease is even more titillating than actually getting what it is that you think you want.
And in true SF fashion, this sexiness isn’t just about watching a single performance on a stage. There’s the chance to “meet and mingle” at Rickshaw for a low cover cost. There’s the opportunity to take classes in pinup photography, tassel twirling and queer burlesque. And there’s the possibility of being inspired to take on the sexiness of this performance art and to walk the streets of San Francisco with a little bit more of a strut.
