Too many people walk into a bar and order either mojitos or spa collins. They are about to see an eight foot tall gay man in a spandex blue bunny suit and stripper heels, a goth-y midget escaping from a straightjacket and a burlesque queen giving fellatio to her own fingers to the macabre-but-hot tune of Bang Bang. This is either the beginning of a really bad joke or the highlights of a really fun burlesque show in The Haight.

Yes, on Thursday I finally made it over to Club Deluxe for the once-monthly performance of Little Minsky’s Burlesque show. I’m not sure whether the highlight of this show is the MC - Scotty the Blue Bunny (who probably isn’t really eight feet tall but when he walks by you in skintight striped spandex and those stripper shoes, you’d swear that he is) or the multi-time performer Kitten on the Keys who makes old time songs sound so dirty. What I do know is that they both pulled out solo rap performances at a burlesque show which gives them both gold stars in my book.

The spotlight for me fell on Dottie Lux (producer of the Red Hots Burlesque show which I still haven’t seen yet but do have on my must-see list) who performed the aforementioned bang bang fellatio. Maybe it was the intensity of the song. Maybe it was the fake (hopefully fake?) blood that she drenched on her body on the stage as she gave herself over to this performance. Maybe it was the streak of darkness her performance gaev to an otherwise sunny and upbeat show. Whatever it was, it caught my attention. If I hadn’t already thought that this show was worth my measly $5 cover, that performance would’ve sealed it.

With two full acts finished off by a sickeningly-sweet-but-certainly-sexy performance by the absolutely adorable Mariel a la Mode and interspersed with increasingly drunk comedy by the blue bunny, Little Minsky’s was certainly a great way to spend a Thursday night in San Francisco. It’s on the second Thursdays of the month which means the next one should be December 11th for those of you who are marking their Google Calendars while reading this.
