Genius Hookups Mashup Site
Thanks to a post by Violet Blue, I’ve now discovered the site HookUpMaps. It’s a fairly simple mashup site that’s totally genius and something that I wish I’d thought to create myself. It takes Craigslist’s casual encounters section and mashes it with Google Maps so that you can easily browse where the hottest hookups are being offered in San Francisco (and elsewhere).
As you can see, when this screenshot was taken this morning, there were 933 people seeking hookups in the downtown San Francisco area alone. That really puts into perspective how many options you’ve got for casually hanging out with someone. Sure, you need to narrow it down based on your gender and theirs (unless you don’t care about details like that), your basic preferences, the creepiness factor of the post and so on. But even with all of that narrowing down, there’s probably someone that you can hook up with a really short distance from your home.
It’s true that you could do the neighborhood narrowing down thing on Craigslist itself but there’s something about the visual stimulation of seeing how really close a casual connection is to where you are currently located that makes the whole thing seem a lot easier. And it gives those voyeurs that are peeking in people’s apartment windows a realistic look at what their chances might be of seeing something happening in any given neighborhood at any given time.
